Over 2000 people died from Sudden Cardiac Death in Every Year
Globally, over 17 million people died of cardiovascular cause or stroke every year. Equivalently, every 2 sceonds, a person has died from sudeen cardiace diseases. In 2010, cardiovascular disease took 6,630 lives in Hong Kong. As estimated 2,000 people died from sudden cardiac death. The cardiologist said cardiovascular or stroke have been the two leading causes of death for middle aged people.
About 80% of people who have a cardiac arrest will die from it that attributed to ventricular fibrillation and stops the heartbeat In the aged 35-year-old or below, the primary reason is inherited cardiac diseases or cardiomyopathies, the patient will die without CPR in the golden period. If the paitent delay CPR after cardiac arrest often results in poor outcome. For 5-10 minutes without CPR, survival rate from cardiac arrest decreases by 7-10% for every minute. Although the Hong Kong ambulance promises the arrirval time within 12 minutes, but the waiting time is still too long for the sudden cardiac arrest patient. This causes the death rate up to 98% under this situation1.
The highest sudden death rate in sports are running marathons
Recently, there has been a significant rise in the sudden death cases caused by cardiovascular disease in strenuous exercise. Sudden deaths often occur shortly during or after the workout. One of the major reasons for such certain tests is congenital heart defects or latent diseases in the young age group. There have been many cases reported that the athletes had sudden death right before the finish line2,3.
Research has shown that running marathon has the highest rate of causing sudden death during sports. Running a marathon is a sport that requires a lot of endurance and stigma, which would put extra loading onto the cardiovascular endurance regardless before the marathon, during, or afterward. The risk of sudden death dramatically increases if the participants have an unknown cardiac defect. Therefore, cardiologists strongly suggest cardiac screening before the race In order to decrease the sudden death rate4.
50% chance of passing the cardiac disease to the Next Generation
Cardiac diseases such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Long QT Syndrom, Brugada Syndrome can be asymptomatic and lethal. If either one of the parents has a mutation in the related genes, there is a 50% chance of passing on the mutation to the next generation: Earlier Detection, Earlier Prevention.
MYGENIA® Inherited Cardiac Disease Genetic Screening (RAC)
Pangenia is to launch MYGENIA® Inherited Cardiac Disease Genetic Screening. This diagnostic test evaluate 255 genes that associated with 81 inherited cardiac diseases. It can detect the inherited cardiac diseases including Arrhythmia, Cardiomyopathy, Lipidemia and Aortopathy, and the related conditions such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Long QT Syndrome, Marfan syndrome. This is the most reliable method for identifiying the person who have familial cardiac disease history, and it is an effective way to prevent tragic occurences of sudden death (SADS). This test can help in identifying the casue of illness and assist in providing treatment otpions. The sample collection is simple and easy.
Sample Collection: EDTA blood or Buccal swabs or Saliva Sample
